Book of the month, with a twist
This month’s item comes
with a twist: a mystery for you to solve. Printed in 1533, and a work in
progress for over 20 years, De occvlta philosophia libri tres
presents contemporary learning on magic and occultism by the controversial
German writer Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim (1486?-1535). A
contemporary and sometimes correspondent of Erasmus (-1536), publication of
this item was delayed for a time by an inquisition on charges of heresy.
Our
copy bears markings and signatures, all curious and barely legible, including
this red wax seal.
The seal (and markings) may or may not be contemporary with its 1533
publication date, and may result from more than one owner, but if you would
like to attempt to solve the mysterious provenance of our copy, please submit
an online request or contact the staff of the Special Collections Reading Room
in the Hardiman Research Building at specialcollections@nuigalway.ie
to view the item during the month of April.
