It has been estimated that one in every ten Icelanders will become published in their lifetime, a staggering and no doubt much-envied fact. They certainly have a history of storytelling. The word ‘saga’ originates from the Old Norse or Icelandic for ‘story’. One of the most recognisable names in epic Icelandic literature is Snorri Sturluson (1179?-1241). Heimskringla , his lengthy saga of the Old Norse kings, was written in the C13th. The Delargy Collection holds much material on Icelandic literature, including works by Snorri Sturluson, such as this 1777 Copenhagen printing of Heimskringla . Its ornately tooled binding would suggest the high social standing of its former owner. If you would like to consult this item, or any item in the Delargy Collection, please submit an online request or contact the staff of the Special Collections Reading Room in the Hardiman Research Building at specialcollections@nuigalway.ie

Print Journals Usage Review - we need your help

Image
The Library is currently engaging in a review of subscriptions to various print journals;  we’re looking to ascertain the level of usage for a selection of journals to see if those subscriptions are cost-effective or not. If you use the print journals located in the library, you may see a sheet like the one below attached to the issue you are browsing. We would greatly appreciate if you would just follow the instructions on the sheet and tick one of the boxes each time you consult that issue for content. In most cases we are looking at the most recent 12 months or so of a title - so if you are consulting an issue of a title that has no sheet attached, but other issues of that title do have the sheet attached, then you don’t need to do anything.

Happy Birthday Shakespeare! - 'Macbeth' as Gaeilge and more from the Archives

Image
As the literary world salutes William Shakespeare on his birthday today, these items from the theatre collections of the James Hardiman Library here at NUI Galway show the works of the Bard were never far from the stages of the West. [James Hardiman Library Archives, Siobhan McKenna Papers, T20/368] From 16th to 23rd November 1941 Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe, the Irish language theatre based in Galway, staged a production of  Macbeth  by William Shakespeare. Translated by S.L O Suilleabhain and directed by Walter Macken, it had been planned that the Taoiseach, Eamonn de Valera, would have attended the opening night. Established in 1928, An Taibhdhearc had found a new lease of life from 1939 with the appointment of Walter Macken as director, who also took the lead in this play. Macken is one of the best loved writers, novelists and literary drivers from the West and his immense contribution is evident throughout the papers and archives An Taibhdhearc. Special Collections item

Why not take time out from study this week to visit the Special Collections Reading Room in the Hardiman Research Building and view Diophantus of Alexandria’s Arithmeticorum libri sex (Toulouse, 1670). Known by many as 'the father of algebra', this is volume six in his Arithmetica series, and it includes the first printed statement of Pierre de Fermat's celebrated last theorem. It was edited by Samuel de Fermat, his son, and our copy bears Samuel’s signature. Our copy also includes the errata leaf which tends to be wanting in many copies. The James Hardiman Library also holds Pierre de Fermat’s Varia opera mathematica (Toulouse, 1679), which bears the signature of Abigail Barusch Lousada, his C19th biographer. Both tomes are Jesuit printings. If you would like to view/ consult either item, please submit an online request or contact the staff of the Special Collections Reading Room in the Hardiman Research Building at specialcollections@nuigalway.ie .
