The Library now has access to a significant new resource - The History of Disabilities: Disabiliti es in Society, Seventeenth to Twentieth Century   This database is collection of primary source material documenting the history of disability in society. It consists of more than 600,000 digitised pages drawn from personal papers, archives and medical libraries.  The resource demonstrates how society has presented and treated individuals with disabilities historically.  It chronicles how individuals were classified and treated, illustrating the many forms of institutional discrimination, political exclusion, and social control under which disabled individuals struggled.  Source materials in this collection include: personal memoirs records of treatments  methods of education forms of remediation reports & proceedings of disability organisations   The publishers Gale have produced a useful guide and background to the resource describing definitio...

175th Anniversary of Student Registration Photo Challenge

Leagan Gaeilge  October 30th marks 175 years since the first cohort of 68 students registered in what was then Queens College Galway.  In celebration, we are launching a photo competition to commemorate our university’s history and growth.  Post your photos to Instagram and tag  @UniofGalwayLib . We will reshare our favourite photos! There are University of Galway Hoodies to be won for the photos with the most likes in each category. There are three photo options. 1. Recreate:  Check out a selection of our  University’s archival images  and recreate a posed photo. Period accurate costumes celebrated but not required! 2. Situate:  Do you recognise the area where one of our  University’s archival images was taken? See if you can capture the present-day location, line up the original photo with the modern day surrounds. University of Galway Research Repository: Green Open Access publishing

    Remember to submit your publications, including peer-reviewed articles, conference papers, reports, books and book chapters to the University of Galway Research Repository . This is known as Green Open Access publishing (or self-archiving), where authors publish in a journal and then deposit the final draft post-refereeing without the publisher's typesetting, formatting, logos and pagination (also known as the post-print) in the repository. Go to the University of Galway Research Repository and follow the How to submit guidance at the Help dropdown or ​ email your publication to researchrepository@universityofgalway.ie ​ Be sure to make your book chapters easier to discover by adding them to the repository also.
