Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Lai MaAssistant Professor at School of Information and Communication Studies at University College Dublin.

Along with representatives from the University of Galway, Dr. Ma will explore the critical role of open publishing in advancing research excellence while addressing the challenges of maintaining impact and quality. With Ireland’s funders increasingly requiring open access through policies aligned with global movements such as cOAlition S, this forum will focus on how responsible open publishing practices can enhance the visibility and citation of research, thereby achieving institutional goals of excellence.

Aimed at leaders in the institution, the event will posit open publishing as a key factor in improving research outcomes while safeguarding quality. Participants will discuss how to align publishing practices with funder policies, promote responsible research assessment, and combat predatory journals by encouraging researchers to publish in and review for reputable outlets.

Key themes include the alignment of open publishing with government policy, particularly the National Open Research Framework (NORF), which promotes a culture of open research across Ireland. The event will also suggest practical routes to open publishing and local initiatives like Responsible Assessment, ensuring research outputs meet the highest standards.
