Digital Tools for Research: II Semester Workshop Schedule

The Digital Tools for Research workshop series resumed in the second semester with Data Visualisation: Tableau, taught by Dr. Heike Vornhagen from the Data Science Institute / Insight Research Ireland Centre for Data Analytics. The workshop participants gained a solid foundation in data visualisation to understand the art and science behind transforming complex information into compelling visuals. For those who missed it, the recording is openly available on our YouTube channel. Slides and datasets used at the workshop are available for download from from GitHub.

The programme for the rest of the semester is as follows. All workshops are ideal for beginners — no prerequisites required!

In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the main concepts of effective design, learning how to transform research into visually engaging and informative posters. This session blends basic design theory with practical application through Canva, ensuring participants leave with the skills to create clear, impactful posters.

Network Analysis with Gephi, 25 March

The session will cover the basics of networks, including nodes, edges and centrality metrics. Participants will gain hands-on experience with Gephi, learning how to import data and visualise complex networks. This workshop is ideal for beginners interested in leveraging network analysis for research or practical applications.

Introduction to Linked Data, 22 April

This workshop offers an introduction to linked data concepts and technologies, focusing on the practical use of RDF (Resource Description Framework), OWL (Web Ontology Language), and TTL (Turtle format) for structuring and connecting data. Participants will learn how to model data with Protégé, query datasets using SPARQL, and understand the principles of semantic web and data interoperability. By the end of the session, attendees will gain hands-on experience in creating and managing linked data.

Introduction to Command Line Interface and Git, 20 May

The workshop will provide an introduction to command line interface (CLI) for both Unix and Windows environments and to version control using Git, equipping attendees with practical skills for effective collaboration and tracking changes in research projects.
