Music of the west of Ireland

Born in London to a Limerick father and a Welsh mother, Eileen Costello (1870-1962) had a deep interest in Irish language and culture which lead to links with the Irish Literary Society, the Irish Texts Society and the London branch of Conradh na Gaeilge. Following a visit to the west of Ireland in 1902, she began to collect music from the area in earnest, an initiative which resulted in Amhráin mhuighe seóla : traditional folk-songs from Galway and Mayo.
