This month in Special Collections we focus on music, with particular reference to collectors of Irish music and song. On display over the next fortnight will be works from O’Neill (pictured), Bunting, Petrie and Hardiman. You might be forgiven for being slightly hoarse today after cheering on Ireland in their 6 Nations victory over the weekend. Here on campus we have an extra reason to be proud as NUI Galway's Robbie Henshaw delivered not only a Man of the Match performance but also his first international try. To do so against a formidable England team in such a bruising encounter in the Aviva Stadium is an incredible achievement. Well done Robbie. A look back in the archives of NUI Galway we can see a long rugby tradition. As far back as 1904, the then Queen's College Galway were active on the rugby field. In the Rugby notes of the student magazine of 1904, the anonymous author describes some of the Galway players. "Dee at full back is as cool and resourceful as ever . . ."; "The wings are all fairly good: Waller and Rentoul are both all-round players . . ." Do join the Special Collections team on Wednesday March 4th for a talk by Prof. Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh, who will offer observations on the original owners of the Bairéad Collection, their careers and interests, in the light of common assumptions about the cultural forces (including reading material) that shaped the 'mind' of Irish-language revivalists in the early decades of the twentieth century. All are welcome to the G011 Seminar Room in the Hardiman Building at 1pm.

This is aimed specifically at Mature Students, although all students are welcome. Our spotlight exhibition Art of the Unseen: Anatomical Illustration in the Special Collections ends this week, with Icones anatomicae (Gottingae : apud viduam B. Abrami Vandenhoeckii, 1756) by Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777) on display. Appointed as chair of medicine, anatomy, botany and surgery in the newly founded university of Göttingen in 1736, this Swiss botanist and anatomist was the first to illustrate the arteries. A Makerspace is a do-it-yourself space where students can access equipment, tools and software to ‘make stuff’. It’s a place where students from different colleges and schools can come together to their share ideas and work on projects. The idea is that students have a well-equipped shared space where they can - Make, Break, Fix and Learn. We are going to add a Makerspace to the James Hardiman library and are looking for suggestions and ideas from students and staff as to what it should contain. If you do a search on the web for “What’s a makerspace” you will see that they come in all shapes and sizes. They vary from a simple room with a few computers all the way up to complete buildings stocked with millions of euro worth of equipment capable of 3D printing a car. Giovanni Domenico Santorini, former student of the noted physician Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694), was considered to be one of the most industrious anatomists of the eighteenth century, and his output is reflected in several eponymous anatomical structures, e.g.: Santorini's minor caruncle.
