Our three ScanPro 3000 microfilm readers have just received a major upgrade -  with new software and better hardware. You can now easily produce scans of Archival Quality in ultra high definition with a massive increase in camera optical resolution – a jump from 6.6 megapixel to 26 megapixels – a four-fold increase!!  And the new software can easily and rapidly produce searchable PDF plus it has tons of useful features. Our look at works from a selection of the collectors of Irish music ends on March 31st, so this is your last chance to see An cruitire by Owen Lloyd (Eoghan Laoide). Born in Kilkee, Co. Clare, Owen Lloyd (c1854-1929) began his study of the Irish harp at an early age. He went on to influence not only Irish harp design but also the teaching, transmission, performance and publication of Irish harp music. Born in London to a Limerick father and a Welsh mother, Eileen Costello (1870-1962) had a deep interest in Irish language and culture which lead to links with the Irish Literary Society, the Irish Texts Society and the London branch of Conradh na Gaeilge. Following a visit to the west of Ireland in 1902, she began to collect music from the area in earnest, an initiative which resulted in Amhráin mhuighe seóla : traditional folk-songs from Galway and Mayo . We are focusing on the collectors of Irish music and song during the month of March, and on display this week are works from Joseph Cooper Walker (-1810) and Thomas Crofton Croker (1798-1854). Walker’s Historical memoirs of the Irish bards can be viewed as one of the first attempts to trace Irish poetry and music from its origins to the present day, i.e.: 1786, a mighty endeavour for the young academic. It also provides the first comprehensive account of Turlough Carolan (1670-1738).  Croker’s Historical songs of Ireland contains pieces from both the Catholic and Protestant sides of the revolutionary struggles of the C17th. Last year the Oireachtas Library digitised o ver 80000 publications dealing with all areas of State policy and activity since 1922 and in some cases earlier. These are now completely accessible in fulltext through the  L&RS Catalogue provided by the Oireachtas Library and Research Service . A historical collection of 19th century documents has also been created. The  Documents Laid collection specifically covers documents that were laid before the Houses of the Oireachtas: Documents relating to matters likely to be the subject of subsequent legislation Documents regarded for other reasons as necessary or of advantage to members of the Dáil/Seanad in connection with the discharge of their duties as such members. This covers Departmental Annual Reports, Expenditure and Statistics, Commission Reports etc. Just to note that the Library will have many of these Official reports in print. The dedication of O'Neill's music of Ireland On display this week in the Special Collections Reading Room is O'Neill's music of Ireland : eighteen hundred and fifty melodies : airs, jigs, reels,hornpipes, long dances, marches, etc. (Chicago : Lyon & Healy , 1903). Francis O’Neill is regarded as one of the foremost collectors of traditional music and song. As chief of police in Chicago, he recruited traditional Irish musicians into the police force and collected tunes widely. His opus is regarded as an important reference work for traditional Irish musicians and music lovers alike. Our copy was formerly owned by Fr. Michael Ryan, a Tipperary native, whose abiding interest in Irish literature and language led him to organise an Irish music, literary and drama festival in the diocese of Sydney where he served for 50 years. This month in Special Collections we focus on music, with particular reference to collectors of Irish music and song. On display this week is George Petrie’s The complete collection of Irish music (London : Boosey & Co., 1902-5). A painter and archaeologist, Petrie’s great love of Irish music inspired him to collect and record local music. He assisted Edward Bunting (1773-1843) in his collecting initiative, and went on to found the Society for the Preservation and Publication of the Melodies of Ireland in 1851. Dublin-born Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) edited this C20th edition, one of his many endeavours in the world of music. On display in the reading room over the next fortnight is a name which should be familiar to even the most unobservant of visitors to this campus: James Hardiman. Born in Westport, James Hardiman was the first librarian of the newly founded Queen’s College Galway. In 1827, however, following his law studies, he spent a period travelling and collecting the Irish verse and songs, an endeavour which resulted in the comprehensive opus Irish minstrelsy : or, Bardic remains of Ireland ( London : Joseph Robins, 1831 ). To mark the Women’s History Month, the   Wikimedia Community Ireland  and the Academic Writing Centre at the James Hardiman Library are proud to present an editathon on Women in History.   The event aims to help turn students into active users and contributors to Wikipedia.   Participants will be able to hone their editing, writing, and research skills. At the moment, there is a debate whether Wikipedia has a place in third-level education.  Should students feel ashamed when using Wikipedia to check facts or dates of a particular historical event? Should teachers encourage students to read only reputable published sources and to avoid consulting Wikipedia? Or can Wikipedia be a useful teaching and learning tool? This month in Special Collections we focus on music, with particular reference to collectors of Irish music and song. On display over the next fortnight is Edward Bunting’s The ancient music of Ireland arranged for the piano forte : to which is prefixed a dissertation on the Irish harp and harpers, including an account of the old melodies of Ireland (Dublin : Hodges and Smith, 1840). Born in Armagh in 1773, the gifted Bunting was arguably the first great collector of Irish music and song.
