British Library Newspapers: Parts II, III & V

  Access to British Library Newspapers, Part II: 1800-1900, Part III: 1741-1950 and Part V: 1746-1950 is now available until September 2027 . British Library Newspapers, Part I: 1800-1900 and Part VI: Ireland, 1783-1950 were purchased outright a few years ago so permanent access to both these collections is available. International Encyclopedia of Human Geography - 2nd Edition Now Available

The Library has recently acquired electronic access to the most recent edition of the International Encyclopedia of Human Geography ., published by Elsevier. The second edition of this encyclopedia (14 volumes in print), contains approximately 800 articles covering a range of related themes and topics.  Examples include: cultural geography postcolonial geographies economic inequalities Historical geographies of political/conflict/border-making events critical disability studies Cartography digital technologies  human/society and nature relations  climate change; natural disasters electoral geographies population growth and distribution  social theories urban social geography The International Encyclopedia of Human Geography is available via the Library Catalogue. Transforming Text into Discovery: OCR Enrichment of Irish Emigrant Collections

Since the summer, the Open and Digital Research Team in the Library have been testing and refining an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) pipeline. The Library’s OCR pipeline aims to convert scanned images of textual archival records into a format that is machine-readable, at scale. This is an especially important enhancement to the University’s digitised heritage collections, making its holdings more searchable and supporting diverse areas of research interest. The first test case for the pipeline has been the Irish emigrant letters taken from the Kerby A. Miller Collection, as published online to the Library’s Digital Collections and a standalone digital repository for materials relating to Irish emigrants to North America called Imirce . In December 2024, the first batch of OCR enriched material has been launched to both the Digital Collections and Imirce online, and further heritage collections are scheduled for processing in 2025.  What this means for users  The Digital ...

British Periodicals Collection III & IV: new collections now available

The Library has recently purchased British Periodicals Collection III and IV .  British Periodicals Collection III focuses on the first half of the twentieth century. The titles are from the prestigious stable of illustrated periodicals known as the “Great Eight” in British publishing history. They are among the foremost popular periodicals of the period and were highly influential in their mix of news/politics, miscellany, art, photography, literature and comedy/satire, while launching the careers of many leading artists/illustrators of the age.  British Periodicals Collection IV continues the expansion into the twentieth century, with particular strengths in the areas of politics (notably socialism and the labour movement), international affairs and conflict, the arts, rural/sporting history, humour/illustration, travel and empire, and family/ teen publications. Counselling and Therapy in Video, Vols. III-V: new collections purchased

  The Library recently purchased access to Counselling and Therapy in Video - Volumes III, IV and V so we now have access to all five volumes of Counselling and Therapy in Video which contains 2,485 videos. This collection provides users with a first-hand look at the realities of working with clients and the challenges associated with putting theoretical concepts into practice. It provides a thorough grounding in dozens of therapeutic methods and diagnoses, insight into the human condition, and training in skills such as reflection and empathy while working with specific populations such as veterans and teens. The Library is marking Mental Health Week / Seachtain na Meabhairshláinte with a display of mental health and wellbeing books in the Library Foyer. We have supported the Student Counselling & Wellbeing Service in developing a reading list -  Health and Wellbeing recommended reading audio/video resources  - which forms part of this display of titles from the Mind, Body Soul Collection.  The Student Counselling & Wellbeing Service also has a comprehensive resource section on their new webpage:  Resources - University of Galway . Celebrating 800 Years of Dominican Life in Ireland

The historic Dominican Convent Library at the University of Galway This month of April, the Dominicans in Galway are celebrating the 800th anniversary of the arrival of the Dominican Order in Ireland. In 1224, Dominican friars from Oxford and London established communities in Dublin and Drogheda, having sailed up the Liffey and the Boyne rivers. In 1241, they set up house in Athenry and in 1488 they took over a ruined abbey on the banks of the Corrib. The Dominican Sisters established a convent in Galway city in 1644 in New Tower Street, now known as St Augustine Street. In 2018, the Dominican Convent in Taylor’s Hill, Galway donated its library of more than 2,000 volumes, built up over five centuries, to University of Galway. Spanning almost five centuries, the library contains a selection of significant religious publications from the 17th Century onwards and was almost lost due to a convent building demolition.     As part of expanding the Library's resources in Artificial Intelligence, we have ordered a range of new e-books covering the experience and application of AI to higher education. Reading List Service - Preparing for Semester II

  The Library's  Reading List Service  is  a one-stop teaching support service for academic staff. We are now preparing for the upcoming semester II. When you use our service we will:  prioritise your course materials  order required books/e-books request chapter and article digitisation  provide direct linking to the list from Canvas Training We are providing in-person  training sessions  to assist lecturers in publishing reading lists on the Reading List Service for the new academic year.  Alternatively lecturers can use the resources provided on our  Reading List Page Existing Reviewing List Owners We request that existing Reading list owners update their current lists by  December 1st . Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Communication: new e-resource

The Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Communication is a new online research encyclopedia dedicated to the large and diverse scholarly world of communication research. Launched in 2015, it publishes essays based on up-to-date, impactful scholarship written by respected authorities in the field and it currently contains 746 full-text articles.  The  Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Communication  was developed for researchers, teachers, and students interested in all facets of the study of communication. Essays examine the evolution and structure of research programs; the questions and puzzles that drive research; and the relationships between theory, methods, and empirical data. In doing so, they provide information about their subjects and also highlight unresolved questions and potential new directions for research. The Sunday Times Historical Archive, 1822-2016: access now available

The Library is delighted to have purchased perpetual access to  The Sunday Times Historical Archive 1822-2016 .  T his resource brings almost two centuries of news together, providing the complete run of the newspaper and its supplements, in one cross-searchable and browsable platform. Despite the similarity of names, The   Sunday Times  was an entirely separate paper from  The Times  until 1966, when both papers came under common ownership. The   Sunday Times  remains editorially independent from The   Times , with its own remit and perspective on the news. The Library already has access to  The T imes Digital Archive 1785-2019  and recently added extra years of content to bring this newspaper more up to date.  The Sunday Times is famous for many of its stories, including Kim Philby's outing as a Soviet spy, the thalidomide investigation, and the publishing of the forged Adolph Hitler diaries. The Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Climate Science is a substantive, peer-reviewed, and regularly updated online reference work.  The editor-in-chief outlines the coverage of this encyclopedia as follows: (1) the understanding of, and response to, the geophysical and biogeochemical system, including the sensitivity of the system to external drivers and its natural variability.  (2) the ubiquitous presence of communication and policymaking and the different cultural framings of climate, as well as the social process of climate science.  (3) the economic and climate policy issues at the international and at the local level. A special aim is to cover many regions of the world by interdisciplinary analyses of what climate, climate impacts, and perspectives on climate are as well as the options for, and the conditions and meaning of, societal response to climate. The Times Digital Archive: increased coverage to 2019

  The Library has purchased seven additional years of fulltext coverage to  The Times Digital Archive.  Coverage of the digitised newspaper now runs from 1785-2019. The Times Digital Archive is an online, full-text facsimile of more than 200 years of The Times , one of the most highly regarded resources for eighteenth-, nineteenth-, and twentieth-century news coverage. This historical newspaper archive allows researchers the opportunity to search and view The Times in its original published context.  The Times  is the oldest daily newspaper in continuous publication. With over 12 million articles available, the archive supports research across multiple disciplines and areas of interest, including business, humanities, political science, and philosophy, along with coverage of all major international historical events. AM Explorer Primary Sources - New Library Resource Available

    The Library has taken out a 12 month subscription to the  AM Explorer Primary Sources  database.   AM Explorer is the platform interface to Adam Matthews' primary source content of  130 digital collections spanning the social sciences and humanities.  Examples of the digital collections available are: African American Communities 1863-1986 American History 1493-1945 Defining Gender 1400-1949 East India Company 1600-1947 London Low Life 1700-1900 Slavery, Abolition and Popular Culture 1400s-2000s Victorian Popular Culture 1779-1930 Historical digital material available includes correspondence, diaries, ephemera, i llustrations, periodicals & printed books, legal documents & maps, newspapers, official records & oral histories.    Search AM Explorer  by keyword or browse  the fascinating  AM Explorer list of collection s .
