    Standards  Kieran Cox from the National Standards Authority of Ireland is coming to the Engineering Building on May 7 th .  Kieran will be available in the Engineering Building foyer from 10.00 am to 1 pm to provide information on the NSAI  Database which the Library subscribes to. Please drop by the NSAI stand on the morning of May 7 th  to talk to Kieran about standards.     The NSAI database is an invaluable tool for students and staff of NUI Galway.   Through the Library subscription we have full text access to all Irish (I.S.), European (EN) and International (ISO) Standards, with further access to regulations, directives and legislation.  You can access the NSAI database via the Library website.  Download a guide to accessing standards here.

The Hardiman Research Building, NUI Galway On the 1st May the Hardiman Research Building was officially launched by Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn, T.D. It has been estimated that one in every ten Icelanders will become published in their lifetime, a staggering and no doubt much-envied fact. They certainly have a history of storytelling. The word ‘saga’ originates from the Old Norse or Icelandic for ‘story’. One of the most recognisable names in epic Icelandic literature is Snorri Sturluson (1179?-1241). Heimskringla , his lengthy saga of the Old Norse kings, was written in the C13th. The Delargy Collection holds much material on Icelandic literature, including works by Snorri Sturluson, such as this 1777 Copenhagen printing of Heimskringla . Its ornately tooled binding would suggest the high social standing of its former owner. The Library is currently engaging in a review of subscriptions to various print journals;  we’re looking to ascertain the level of usage for a selection of journals to see if those subscriptions are cost-effective or not. If you use the print journals located in the library, you may see a sheet like the one below attached to the issue you are browsing. We would greatly appreciate if you would just follow the instructions on the sheet and tick one of the boxes each time you consult that issue for content. In most cases we are looking at the most recent 12 months or so of a title - so if you are consulting an issue of a title that has no sheet attached, but other issues of that title do have the sheet attached, then you don’t need to do anything.
