Irish Newspaper Archive: National and Regional Papers

The Irish Newspaper Archive is a remarkable resource which provides access to a range of national and provincial newspapers, with extensive historical and contemporary coverage. The newspapers are in complete digital, searchable form. It is the only electronic source for the Irish Independent and the Sunday Independent.  The coverage of the provincial newspapers in particular is current. It is so good that the Irish Newspaper Archive is now the main method of access to these papers in the Library.

From the Irish Independent:
US President Ronald Reagan receives an
honorary NUI degree on his visit to the then UCG  in 1984

The Browse function within each title is particularly useful and provides an image of the issue of the newspapers - see right.

You can search by keyword or headline and use date ranges to help narrow your search.

Some of the main newspapers covered include:
  • Anglo-Celt 1846-
  • Connaught Sentinel 1927-
  • Connaught Tribune 1909-
  • Galway City Tribune-
  • Freeman’s Journal  1763-1924
  • Irish Independent 1905-
  • Irish Press 1931-1995
  • Leitrim Leader 1905-
  • Tuam Herald 1837-
  • A full list of titles with coverage is available

Check out our website for more information on other newspapers available in the Library, and also see a previous ezine article on accessing the  Irish Times online.
