New Access Control System in Operation at the Library

Access Control System at the Hardiman Library
Having commenced on Monday 27th January a new system of Access Control Gates was fully activated at the entrance to the James Hardiman Library. The system will require you to swipe your University ID Card to both enter and exit the Library.  The introduction of the turnstiles will enable the Library to improve security, prevent use of facilities by unauthorised external users, as well as providing valuable statistics on the use of the Library.

In order to activate the Access Control Gates on entry and exit you just need to hold your University Staff ID Card a few inches away from the square green sensor light.  Please note that the reader is sensitive enough to allow you to keep your card in an outside pocket of your wallet or bag and still read it.

Simply swipe your NUI Galway ID card to enter
To facilitate quick and easy entry and exit please ensure that you carry your University Staff ID Card with you at all times even when only leaving the Library for a short period, as you will require it to swipe out of the Library as well as for swiping in.  Should you forget your University  ID Card you may request a temporary one day pass, on production of valid ID (e.g. credit card, driving licence, passport), which will be issued at the Library Stewards Desk at the entrance to the Library.  Your details will be verified and you will be issued a temporary one day card once per semester.

The Access Control system is part of the ongoing commitment to improve the infrastructure and environment of the Library for its users. By providing a more secure and dedicated Library and by learning more of how our users use our service will enable the Library to meet its users' needs into the future.

Are these the same kinds of systems that are implemented in amusement parks and subway systems? Seems like they all operate in much the same way. Controlling the public's access to given locations and tracking the amount of traffic on an hourly basis. http://www.guardiansecurity.co/products/access-control-systems
