Balfour Album On-Line
The album was presented to Arthur Balfour in the summer of 1896, a year after the railway had opened. It remained in the property of the Balfour family until 1987 when the then Earl of Balfour offered to sell it to the National Library of Ireland. Staff at the National Library felt that it more properly belonged in Galway and it was accordingly offered to the Librarian of the James Hardiman Library who purchased it for the library's collection. The Album has been digitised by James hardiman Library Staff and is now available on-line at

SFX Service Interruption
** We are still working to restore the service as soon as we can. We're sorry for the incovenience and appreciate your patience ** [Monday, 14:00]
To facilitate internal network reorganisation, the IP address of the server sfx.library.nuigalway.ie is changing to 140.203.15.50. This change will take up to 24 hours as DNS records do not propagate throughout the network immediately, but require all caches to expire and refresh. In the meantime If you experience any difficulty accessing sfx.library.nuigalway.ie simply use the IP address. For example replace:
http://sfx.library.nuigalway.ie/sfx_test/az/
with
http://140.203.15.50/sfx_test/az/

IReL: a valued research resource
Despite cutbacks, funding has been secured for the continuation of IReL (Irish Research eLibrary). This means that researchers will continue to have access to key research resources, thanks to vital support from HEA and IUA Council. Reduced costs have been achieved following major negotiations wit publishers.
To mark this achievement, there will be a celebration launch by the University President, Dr James J Browne. The event will take place on Monday 5 July at 16.30 in the Library foyer. As part of the launch, Subject and Research Librarians will be present to discuss the advantages offered by IReL. Library staff will be pleased to welcome academic staff and researchers to the launch. Please email rioghna.moggan@nuigalway.ie by 30 June if you would like to attend.
IReL is a nationally funded electronic research library supporting researchers across a range of disciplines. It delivers quality peer-reviewed online research journals, databases and e-books to the desktops of researchers.
It has the advantage of providing economies of scale, since it would not be possible for individual institutions to afford all of the electronic resources available through IReL. It also allows for the collaborative cross-institutional and cross-disciplinary nature of the various research initiatives. In addition to ensuring Ireland's competitive advantage for access to high quality research, the benefits of IReL are available to all students and staff in the universities.
You can find out more about IReL on the Library's website.

The Royal Society- Digital Journal Archive freely available to view until 30 July 2010!
To access the archive, visit: http://royalsocietypublishing.org/journals
About: The archive dates back to 1665 and contains in excess of 68,000 articles, from the first ever article published in our oldest journal Philosophical Transactions to the most recent interdisciplinary article published in our youngest journal Interface Focus.
The Archive provides a record of some key scientific discoveries from the last 340 years including: Halley's description of 'his comet' in 1705; details of the double Helix of DNA by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1954; and Edmond Stone's breakthrough in 1763 that willow bark cured fevers, leading to the discovery of salicylic acid and later the development of aspirin. It also contains papers documenting the discovery of new planets, the first descriptions of organisms through a microscope, and the first account of photography. Early papers contain fascinating descriptions of how Captain James Cook preserved the health of his crew aboard the HMS Endeavour and the astonishment of 18th century Society at the performance of an eight year-old Mozart.
Some of the more obscure papers explore rudimentary prototypes of modern day technology: trials proposed by Robert Boyle in 1665 hypothesize on the possibilities of blood transfusions, pondering 'whether a fierce dog stocked with the blood of a cowardly dog may not become more tame?', whilst a forerunner for ventilators was discussed in a paper by Robert Hooke in 1667 entitled 'An account of an experiment made by Mr Hook (sic), of preserving animals alive by blowing through their lungs with bellows.'

RIAN - Irish Research Online
RIAN will significantly increase the visibility and impact of Irish research, especially at a time when the ability to showcase research output and identify institutional research strengths is extremely important in attracting new funding and high quality staff. It is also timely in demonstrating the added value and economies of scale of a shared service approach nationally.
The development of RIAN was managed by the Irish Universities Association Librarians' Group, and is supported by the Association. It is the result of a three year project which was equally funded by the universities and the Irish Government's Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF). Further information is available on the IUA website.
NUI Galway's ARAN is indexed by RIAN and currently provides open access to over 600 publications by NUI Galway authors. To deposit your papers and for more information, please contact Fergus Fahey, Insitutional Repository Librarian, at fergus.fahey@nuigalway.ie or telephone extension 5961.

Eyewitness: Ireland through the lens of Colman Doyle

The James Hardiman Library is hosting an exhibition of more than 80 photographs by Colman Doyle. The exhibition, on loan from the National Library of Ireland, displays a selection from almost 25,000 images by Colman held by the National Library.
Colman was probably Ireland's first documentary style photographer, with his portraits of political leaders and literary figures, as well as for his photographs of ordinary people throughout Ireland. As a sports photographer, he acquired a huge reputation for his action shots of GAA matches and horse races.
The exhibition, located on the ground floor of the Library, includes portraits of politicians such as Charles J Haughey and Eamon de Valera, and visiting dignitaries including John F Kennedy and Princess Grace of Monaco. There are fascinating vignettes of Irish life from the 1950s to the 1990s. Colman recorded daily life in Northern Ireland during the 1970s and 1980s, a period during which he photographed behind-the-scenes images of political meetings and street violence.
Also featured in the exhibition will be a film, first shown on TG4 in 2006, that follows Colman as he returns to photograph West Kerry, reconnecting with his earliest work as a press photographer.
The exhibition will remain open until 25 June 2010.

Forthcoming IReL Cancellations - Message from Librarian January 29th 2010
You will be aware that the current round of IReL (Irish Research eLibrary) funding came to an end in December 2009. The IUA Librarians' Group is engaged in positive discussions with the HEA and others to secure funding for IReL for 2010 onwards but it is likely that this will be at significantly reduced levels. Due to increasing publisher costs and other factors it is necessary for some IReL resources to be cancelled even if IReL funding were to be maintained at pre-2010 levels. Arising from this, and in the first of what will probably be a number of cancellation processes, the resources listed at: IReL News will shortly become unavailable through IReL. These resources have been identified for cancellation because they incur the highest cost per use.
The Library regrets the cancellation of any resource. We are working with our colleagues, the HEA, university senior officers and others to maintain access to as many resources through IReL as possible. We will keep you updated as the situation evolves but in the meantime please do not hesitate to contact us with any comments or queries.
For comments or queries please contact Monica Crump at monica.crump@nuigalway.ie or Ext. 3765, your subject librarian or your research librarian.
Best wishes,
John Cox
University Librarian

What are the black squares in the library catalogue?

Have you seen black squares like this within e-Knowledge (the library catalogue) and wondered what they were? Well, they are QRcodes.
QRcodes are handy barcodes you can scan with a smartphone. We've started to use them experimentally in the library catalogue. We hope they'll save your fingers inputting lengthy URLs when you want to bring up a book-location map or ARAN repository PDF in your smartphone. Bring the map with you as you locate the book! Read the PDF on the bus.
